Conservation Education at Carlsbad SWCD

National Environmental Education Week

District staff participated in National Environmental Education week by giving presentations to the counties fifth graders about the water cycle and erosion and with the Rolling Rivers trailer about watershed health.

4th Grade Foresters

This year the District sponsored a 4th Grade Foresters project with Carlsbad 4th Grade students.  Each child received a tree seedling to plant where they wish as part of New Mexico's Arbor Day celebration March 12, 2010.

Children’s Water Festival

Staff also participated in the Children's Water Festival for 4th Grade students in Carlsbad, Loving and Artesia.

Stewardship Week

Stewardship Week is April 26- May2, 2010.  The theme this year is "Conservation Habits = Healthy Habitats”.  The District distributes educational materials to all the elementary students in the District and holds a poster contest for the 4th and 5th grade students.

Eddy County Fair

Each year the District sponsors a booth at the Eddy County Fair to inform area citizens of the various projects the District is involved in.

Earth Day

As part of Carlsbad’s Earth Day celebration, the District’s display and Rolling Rivers trailer is set up at the Living Desert State Park.

Other educational resources

In addition to educating our youth about conservation, the District, in conjunction with the Eddy County Coordinated Weed Management Area (CWMA) has produced a 12-page newspaper insert about noxious and invasive weed identification and control.  Extra copies are available from the district office.  Carlsbad SWCD has many other educational resources available as well.  Our Rolling Rivers Water Trailer is available on request for any class or event.  The Xeric Gardening Plots are established to be used as an outdoor class room on conservation minded plantings.  Many other brochures, lesson plans and educational resources are available, just come by the District and let us help you with your conservation education needs.
